The parasitic mite Acarophenax lacunatus kills the eggs upon which it feeds and seems to have potential as a biological control agent of stored grain pests. The lack of biological studies on this mite species led to the present study carried out in laboratory conditions at eight different temperatures (ranging from 20 to 41°C) and 60% relative humidity using Rhyzopertha dominica as host. The higher the temperature, the faster: (1) the attachment of female mites to the host egg (varying from 1 to 5 h); (2) the increase in body size of physogastric females (about twice faster at 40°C than at 20°C); and (3) the generation time (ranging from 40 to 220 h). In addition, the higher the temperature, the shorter the maximum female longevity (ranging from about 75 to 300 h). The two estimated temperature thresholds for development of A. lacunatus on R. dominica were 18 and 40°C. The average number of female and male offspring per gravid mite were 12.8 and 1.0, respectively, with sex ratios (females/total) ranging from 0.91 to 0.94 (maximum at 30°C). The net reproductive rate and intrinsic rate of increase also presented maximum values at 30°C (12.1 and 0.04, respectively).  相似文献

Controlling water activity (a w) can significantly impact the growth of Salmonella in poultry litter and manure — a phenomenon that was studied quantitatively using two common serotypes of Salmonella. The quantitative effect of changes in levels of a w on Salmonella populations was determined using inoculated, frosted glass rectangles placed in closed chambers (microcosms). Glass rectangles with known concentrations of Salmonella enteritidis and S. brandenburg were placed in microcosms maintained at an a w level of 0.893 for 24 h at room temperature (RT) and then transferred to other microcosms maintained at the same temperature but with higher a w levels (0.932 and 0.987). Salmonella populations on the slides were quantified at 4, 18, 24, and 48 h. Slightly elevated levels of a w (<0.1, i.e., 10% equilibrium relative humidity) for 24 h resulted in a 100-fold increase in counts of Salmonella. The data also suggested that in vitro adaptation to dry environments may occur when the organisms are exposed to alternating levels of relatively high and low (0.987 and 0.893) levels of a w. Any increased tolerance of Salmonella to reduced levels of a w could be the result of physico-chemical changes in the organism due to selective environmental pressure, formation of a protective biofilm, and/or entry into a dormant state. Results from this study are compatible with those from previously reported on-farm surveys, reinforcing the contention that maintaining a w below 0.85 in and around litter/manure surfaces in poultry or livestock bedding areas may be a critical factor in safe production of food. A native fungus, Plectosporium tabacinum (van Beyma) M. E. Palm, W. Gams et Nirenberg, has potential as a bioherbicide for the control of both herbicide-resistant and herbicide-susceptible false cleavers. Limited information is available on the infection process of P. tabacinum. P. tabacinum spore distribution pattern, germination, penetration, and colonization on false cleavers leaves were examined using confocal, light, and scanning electron microscopy. The results demonstrated that conidia were distributed over the entire surface of leaves and cotyledons. More than 90% of the conidia germinated on the leaf surface 6-8 h after inoculation. Penetration of the leaf epidermis by conidia started 8-10 h after inoculation. Histological observation showed that no appressoria were formed by P. tabacinum, but its hyphae produced appressed club-like structures that penetrated the cuticle and epidermal layers. No stomata or other natural openings were observed on the upper leaf surface of false cleavers seedlings. Penetration occurs directly on epidermal cells with more frequent intercellular penetrations. Hyphal penetration was visualized at a depth of 30 and 40 üm after 8 and 16 h of incubation, respectively. Secondary hyphae colonized mesophyll cells 16 h after inoculation. Even spore distribution, short spore germination time, club-like infection structure formation, direct penetration, quick colonization, and mucous secretion on false cleavers leaves may contribute to the kill of false cleavers by P. tabacinum. Slow spore germination and germ tube growth, low spore germination numbers, and no infection structure formation on Brassica napus leaves may be factors affecting the host selectivity of P. tabacinum.  相似文献

In light of the European Directive on Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC Directive), traditional environmental regulation can be improved using the framework of industrial ecology. The objective of the IPPC Directive is to achieve a high level of protection of the environment as a whole (Article 1) by applying the best available techniques (BAT). In essence, the IPPC Directive obliges member states of the European Union to include considerations such as resources, energy, waste, and multimedia emissions when permitting industrial installations. This is a marked contrast to traditional environmental regulation that focuses on individual media of an individual site. In order to take all considerations into account, an integrated assessment of technologies is needed, for which a standard method is currently lacking.
In this article, a systematic approach is introduced for the integrated assessment of IPPC technologies using life-cycle assessment (LCA), a form of environmental assessment that can be broadened to an overall assessment of environmental, economic, and social aspects. This systematic approach has proven to be successful for the environmental assessment of the described cases. It is suggested here that weighting can be omitted for the evaluation of IPPC technologies. Leaving the weighting step to competent authorities of member states and allowing them to consider local issues provides maximum opportunity for the subsidiarity and flexibility principles of the IPPC Directive.  相似文献

ABSTRACT An assessment on the biological control potential with the fish muddy loaches (Misgurnus mizolepis) was conducted against naturally bred Culex pipiens pollens larvae in four ponds (A, B, C and D) in Busan from July through September, 2001. Predation of the fish at 3 different release rates of 4,5, and 6 fish/m2 resulted in mostly over 90% mosquito control from the first week after treatment through the end of the survey period for 11 weeks. There were no significant difference among the release rates of fish at the 5% level of probability. However, substantial controls of 43.0% and 25.9% were obtained from pond C during the 3rd and 7th weeks after the fish introduction, respectively. The results of those two weeks showed a lower biological control by the introduced larvivorous fishes. This might be due to the presence of heavy organic matters including aquatic weeds and/or severely polluted water from sewage in pond C. The aquatic weeds covered the pond's water surface which may have affected the deterioration of mosquito preying in favor of aquatic weeds. Also, the fishes were observed to avoid severely contaminated sewage water in some parts of ponds A and C where more mosquito larvae were found.  相似文献

Background: The occurrence of shrub patches, alternating with either bare soil or low herbaceous cover, is a common feature in arid and semi-arid shrublands throughout the world. This patchy pattern of vegetation may result from water limitation, modulated by plant interactions; grazing (offtake and tramping) by livestock may cause further patchiness vegetation structure.

Aims: We hypothesised that vegetation patchiness in the semi-arid shrublands of north-eastern Patagonia would be increased by livestock grazing, but not by positive interactions between adult plants of shrubs and grasses.

Methods: We compared vegetation cover and pattern at three grazing intensities (exclosure, light and heavy grazing) and measured the growth of a representative shrub and grass in the presence and absence of the other to quantify the role of plant-to-plant interactions and its interaction with grazing for vegetation structure.

Results: In the grazing exclosure and in moderately grazed areas, vegetation cover among shrub patches was larger, whereas the top cover of shrubs was lower than in the heavily grazed areas. We did not find any evidence of positive interactions between shrub and grass life forms.

Conclusions: Our results were consistent with the hypothesis that livestock grazing increased the formation of patchy vegetation cover in arid and semi-arid shrublands.  相似文献

【背景】产肠毒素大肠杆菌K99是引起仔猪腹泻的主要致病菌之一,目前对该病的治疗主要依赖于抗生素,但大量抗生素的长期使用造成了病原菌耐药性的增强,亟待寻求一种新的产品来解决这一问题。【目的】以一株产肠毒素大肠杆菌K99为宿主菌,从畜禽粪水中分离噬菌体并对其基本生物学特性进行研究,同时在小鼠上检验噬菌体对小鼠大肠杆菌感染的防治效果。【方法】双层平板法分离筛选烈性噬菌体并观察噬菌斑形态;纯化后进行电镜观察、核酸类型鉴定;测定噬菌体热稳定性、p H稳定性、最佳感染复数及一步生长曲线;通过小鼠体内实验检测噬菌体对小鼠大肠杆菌感染的防治效果。【结果】从畜禽粪水中分离出1株产肠毒素大肠杆菌K99强裂解性噬菌体,命名为ФK99-1,经电镜观察及核酸类型鉴定,应属于肌尾噬菌体科(Myoviridae)。噬菌体能耐受50°C左右的高温,在p H 3.0-10.0范围内效价稳定。最佳感染复数为0.000 01,暴发量为108 333 PFU/cell;运用噬菌体ФK99-1预防和治疗小鼠产肠毒素大肠杆菌K99感染,结果显示小鼠发病症状较阳性对照组明显减轻,小鼠血液内大肠杆菌K99含量也显著低于阳性对照组,通过病理切片观察显示脏器发病情况也较阳性对照组减轻。【结论】ФK99-1是一株在不同温度、不同酸碱性环境中有较强适应能力,且在小鼠大肠杆菌感染上表现出良好防治效果的裂解性肌尾科大肠杆菌噬菌体。  相似文献

The shoulder allows kinematic and muscular changes to facilitate continued task performance during prolonged repetitive work. The purpose of this work was to examine changes during simulated repetitive work in response to a fatigue protocol. Participants performed 20 one-minute work cycles comprised of 4 shoulder centric tasks, a fatigue protocol, followed by 60 additional cycles. The fatigue protocol targeted the anterior deltoid and cycled between static and dynamic actions. EMG was collected from 14 upper extremity and back muscles and three-dimensional motion was captured during each work cycle. Participants completed post-fatigue work despite EMG manifestations of muscle fatigue, reduced flexion strength (by 28%), and increased perceived exertion (∼3 times). Throughout the post-fatigue work cycles, participants maintained performance via kinematic and muscular adaptations, such as reduced glenohumeral flexion and scapular rotation which were task specific and varied throughout the hour of simulated work. By the end of 60 post-fatigue work cycles, signs of fatigue persisted in the anterior deltoid and developed in the middle deltoid, yet perceived exertion and strength returned to pre-fatigue levels. Recovery from fatigue elicits changes in muscle activity and movement patterns that may not be perceived by the worker which has important implications for injury risk.  相似文献
